So, You Want to Play Beach Volleyball in Santa Monica? Here’s How…

December 7th, 2018

Sunny Santa Monica is known for its beautiful beaches and amazing ocean views, but not everyone likes to do the same thing once their feet hit the sand. While many people come to Santa Monica beaches to relax, sit in the sun and enjoy the nice weather, others come to compete! Volleyball is very popular in Santa Monica, with two-man beach volleyball originating right here on the beaches of Santa Monica. There are courts up and down the coast where you can find people playing at almost any time of day.

Beach volleyball has been around for over 100 years and is traditionally played with 2 players per team. Since 1915, popularity of the sport has continued to grow, particularly in coastal cities, and was added as an official Olympic sport in 1996. You don’t need to be a pro to play, but knowing some of the basic rules can make the game more fun.

Of course, beach volleyball isn’t a solo sport. You should bring a team of friends if you want to get a game going! If you’ve ever been to Santa Monica before, you’ve probably seen the beach volleyball courts, and also seen groups of people playing. The courts can be very busy, both at day and at night, so finding a group makes it easier to make sure you get on a court. Check out the Santa Monica Beach Volleyball Club if you’re getting serious about the game.

What to Do When the Courts are Full

While you may be able to find an open court to jump on with a group of friends, there is always a chance that the beach volleyball courts are already full when you arrive. What should you do instead? If you came with the intent of working up a sweat, there are plenty of other activities you can partake in as well. Take a run along the Santa Monica beach – you may even find another open court along the way! The original Muscle Beach is also a stone’s throw away from the Pier.

Of course, you can always keep an eye out for an open court from the Pier as well. Take a walk out over the ocean, or stop by Pacific Park to ride the famous Ferris wheel to make your trip to Santa Monica worth it!

Join the Community

Santa Monica’s beach volleyball community is growing, and you could be a part of it. Many first-time players quickly become regulars, playing with their same team weekly along the beach. No previous experience is required! Hope to see you on the courts soon!
