Pacific Park’s newest offerings have all the trappings of an authentic California experience
SANTA MONICA, Calif., (May 24, 2017) — Pacific Park takes a swing, a wac and a whirl with the opening of two new rides and a specialty restaurant at the two-acre amusement park on the world-famous Santa Monica Pier in 2017 including “Shark Frenzy” ride, “Seaside Swing” ride and “Wac-A-Molé Tacos” restaurant.
Sitting aptly over the Pacific Ocean, Pacific Park took its most recognizable inhabitants and adapted the “Tilt-A-Whirl” concept for the new “Shark Frenzy” ride. With seven whirling cars on tilting platforms, guests sit in the jaws of the ocean’s most iconic sharks including the Blue, Bull, Great White, Lemon, Mako, Sand Tiger and Tiger species. Riders are moved in a circular motion while whirling around and sent side-to-side in sudden, unpredictable movements. The seven colorful breaching shark cars are accentuated with eclectic beach trappings such as shark warning signs, shark-bitten surfboards, lifesaving buoys and beach warning flags.
A more calming approach to a day at the beach is a leisurely family ride on Pacific Park’s new “Seaside Swing.” The relaxing, bench-like swing provides panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from Palos Verdes Peninsula to Santa Monica Mountains. The Seaside Swing seats up to 16 guests, sways in a 45-degree arc and is highlighted by vibrant colors and a beach motif.
Adding to the fun, Pacific Park now offers “Wac-A-Molé Tacos,” a new taco shop on the Santa Monica Pier. “Wac-A-Molé Tacos” takes the whimsical concept of one of the Park’s most popular and classic midway games “Wac-a-Mole” to the new restaurant that features authentic, California tacos, burritos, and tortas in the midway of the Santa Monica Pier.
“The opening of the new rides and dining outlet is part of our ongoing commitment to our guests and the community to consistently deliver an authentic California experience,” says Jeff Klocke, Vice President and General Manager at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier. “This year’s openings follow the reveal of our dynamic new Ferris wheel lighting system that now celebrates more than 20 years on the Santa Monica Pier.”
In May 2016 Pacific Park debuted a nearly $1 million new lighting system on the world-famous Ferris wheel to celebrate its 20th Birthday that features higher resolution, greater color depth and faster “frames per second” display speed.
Standing 130 feet above the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific Wheel’s new 174,000 LED lights are mounted on the Ferris wheel’s structure including the 40 spokes and two hubs. The world’s only solar-powered Ferris wheel’s new lighting system features 16.7 million color value combinations while the new programming and display software upgrades increase imaging to 24 frames per second to display dynamic, custom, computer-generated lighting entertainment. The eco-friendly, enhanced LED lighting provides 81 percent greater energy savings than most Ferris wheel’s traditional incandescent bulbs.
The nine-story tall Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel first debuted in May 1996 with the opening of Pacific Park and was adapted as the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel in November 1998.
Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, LA’s only admission free amusement park, offers 12 amusement rides, 14 midway games, an oceanfront food plaza and beachside shopping. In addition to the Pacific Wheel solar-powered Ferris wheel, Pacific Park’s signature rides include The West Coaster, a steel roller coaster that races 55 feet above the Santa Monica Bay; and Inkie’s Air Lift Balloon Ride, the high-flying, family-sharing kids’ ride.
